The Ed Roman Quicksilver Model Guitar

JET "Earlewood" with Parakeet Inlays
A Word from Ed
| Recently I was speaking to a new customer who was considering buying
a hand made guitar from a smaller builder. He was impressed with the ones I
have listed on my page. He
He named about 5 other builders that were not listed on my site and he intimated that he was considering those also. I informed him that at one time or another I had purchased each and every one of the brand names he listed and that they all had Failed my criteria. My criteria is fairly strict, I am a stickler for fit and finish. I don't care how good a guitar looks in a picture, if it doesn't look good from 3 feet, I reject them. There are many small builders who have some pretty good designs, they just fail in the final execution of the product. I have seen some guitars with beautiful wood, with inlay work and glue ups that are not even mildly acceptable. I have seen some guitars that play well but the paint work is horrible. I have seen guitars where the paint is flawless but there are obvious flaws in the workmanship. In short it is rare that the whole package is perfect. I occasionally get stuck with some of these mediocre guitars, If and when that happens I generally will sell them cheaply on a closeout. All the guitars listed in the links above are absolute top quality and bear my seal of approval. I have personally tested these and many others that you don't see listed. I guarantee your satisfaction or you may return the guitar (see terms). In fact I will buy at least one of almost any new brand of guitar that comes out. For every time I have been happy, I have been disappointed at least three times. Occasionally, I will still get a guitar from one of my top builders that may have a cosmetic problem. These are available at an extremely good deal. Remember that a good deal on a bad guitar is not a really good deal at all. I can afford to do this. Many consumers simply can't afford to take a chance. Because, if I don't like the product I will either redo it and wholesale it out or just plain dump it out at cost. In several cases I have been unable to sell the guitars at all. Some people have expressed some dismay that I am not carrying certain lines of supposedly "handmade" guitars. The several usually in question are actually not handmade at all. In fact they aren't even made by the people whose names appear on the headstock. There are several large CNC companies out there: NC
Solutions, Warmoth, All Parts, WD Enterprises, Wildwood Banjo Companies like Lak-Land have their necks made in Montana and the bodies made in California. These parts are shipped to Chicago where they are assembled and sold as supposedly hand made. The last I heard Pat Wilkins in California was doing all their paint work. Most of these subcontractor companies are quite good and sometimes I use a couple of them myself. However I don't use them for any of our handmade one of a kind custom pieces. I have a problem with companies who charge high money for supposedly hand made pieces when in reality they are not handmade at all. There is absolutely nothing illegal in what they do. In fact I have used some of these same companies to make bodies for several of my lower cost and kit guitars. There is also nothing illegal about pricing an instrument at three times it's value just so that some poor sap will think it's hand made. In fact I would not bother exposing these companies if they sold their instruments at what I consider to be fair market value.

Ed,
I had my first conversation with you about ten years ago on the phone in which I was looking for a neck for a Kramer guitar. The subject soon changed to my Les Paul recording (which was retrofitted with three humbucking pick-ups). I proudly commented how it was the finest playing guitar that I had ever touched. Your comment was that it was the worst. BAM, Oh you "Son Of A Bitch" was the first thing that entered my mind along with a host of other "flavorable" thoughts. It took me about five years of hard playing and sneaking back to your website (What is that SOB ranting about now?)to discover the shortcomings of the outdated tech of this guitar and to discover just where you coming from. It finally dawned on me that there was a slim chance you might just know a little more about guitars than me (No Sh**). After my "rebirth", I decided to climb out of the cave and purchase a new guitar. I completely wore out your website and decided to put my fate in your hands. If I was going to spend this kind of money, I needed to do it once and only once. I found myself drawn to the JET section of your site over and over again. The testimonials and your very high regards for Jeff's talent (That's what really sealed the deal) made me select JET to be my next guitar. I proceeded with the order and all the other things involved through your store and to shorten the story, I am looking at my JET 278 PLUS CARRIBEAN BUST as I'm pecking away at this keyboard. There is nothing more I can say about JET guitars that has not been said time and time again. This one is stunning in every aspect (beauty and playability) I would like to sincerely thank you and your staff for making this dream a reality. Andrew Hoover, Naples Florida |

I was
recently at a guitar shop and I noticed some McInturff guitars.
They had several different models. I thought that I had seen
these guitars listed on you "Best Guitars in the World" page,
but when I looked today, I couldn't find McInturff listed on
your site. I found his older model (Polaris) to be vastly
superior to his newer models which were much more expensive. I
play two guitars at the same time via two-hand tapping, so a low
action is a paramount requirement for me, but I found the newer
models to have so many high frets that I couldn't get the action
nearly as low as on his Polaris model, as I had to raise the
action to compensate for the uneven frets. I wondered if his
quality has slipped and this is why I didn't see him on your
page anymore? I really felt that for nearly $3,000 the new ones
were very sub-par. Anthony Deaton
Hello Anthony I took McInturff off this page years and years ago, 1997 or so. Not for quality reasons but for design reasons, and his complete and total failure to give any of his customers any kind of custom options. His attitude was really bad and his designs were all old school 22 fret BS. He was an ex Hamer guy and I think he had delusions of grandeur because Hamer had achieved a mild level of fame. I completely concur with your finding a lessening of quality. He is pretty much a nonentity these days. I think he is running a repair facility down in North Carolina. I can remember telling him and his wife both that they would have to be more flexible if they wanted to be in the custom guitar business. Both of them pretty much blew me off, So I guess I should say something like "I Told You So" Ed Roman |
