In the 50s and 60s the six string bass was used in Nashville recordings to double the acoustic bass lines. This technique, referred to as tic tac bass, produced bass lines with a distinctive click and presence that was so prevalent in sound recordings of that era. These instruments have since found their way into all styles of modern music. Normally played with a thin pick and tuned E~to~E one octave below standard guitar.
