I don't want to get off on a rant here but the public should at least be made aware of this scam, I know I am spitting directly into the wind, because to the best of my knowledge there is nothing that can be done.

It was put together, masterminded and perpetrated by a couple of guys with 70's haircuts and egos the size of California. This is a story so foul and so despicable that Ed Roman says it should be ILLEGAL.

I am going to use analogies here, because I don't have time for a lawsuit and It simply makes good sense !!

Lets say you owned a small medium or large chain of music stores.... Anyone could easily pull off this scam  if they owned 4 or 5 stores.   The bigger the chain the easier and more dastardly  the scam.

Ok now let's say one of your stores maybe the flagship store for example is located in Downtown LA or Boston or New York.

Lets say you have accumulated several hundred thousand dollars worth  of supposed vintage guitars.   At today's ridiculous prices that would be really easy to do. Especially if you had a bunch of stores located in small town USA.

Here's what the these low life maggots are doing

First... They put vintage guitars in many of their their stores at 20% higher prices than the going rate (Uh Oh you probably know who I'm talking about because that was a definite give away!

Second, They pretend that they are having no trouble selling them. When in reality they are simply moving them around from store to store.

John Q. Customer sees the guitar and laughs at the price. Several weeks later it's gone!  the salespeople tell him it sold.  John Q. Customer ask the salesman who was crazy enough to buy the guitar. No one seems to remember,  because it sold when they weren't there or management made the sale.

Another couple of different ones hit the store at even higher prices one disappears almost immediately and a couple of weeks later "boom" The other one sells.

Now if you stop and think for a minute this is what happens ... The Suckers, I mean customers in the immediate vicinity of these stores get a false sense of value on these guitars.  They start to assume that the guitars are more valuable than they actually are.  These customers  are being professionally manipulated, duped and played like a piano.  Occasionally one will really sell.  Then, they really play that one up big. On the website and the salespeople in the store will talk about this repeatedly to every customer who walks into the store.  The salespeople in this store are commissioned and they get big fat commissions when they sell one so they will say anything to further the perpetration of the scam.  (I refuse to pay commissions for that reason and many others)

Many of the guitars of course won't sell.  They make their rounds from store to store for over a year.  They end up in a small private area that the general public does not see. This room is reserved for the real wealthy celebrity marks who have the money and have heard all the stories of how these guitars increase in value tremendously.  I personally, am a pretty big fan of several of these people as actors, some of their movies are some of my personal favorites.

When these rich or famous people purchase these guitars it actually does increase the perceived value of the instrument.  Remember I said "perceived value" with the accent on "perceived"

If you were selling these guitars yourself think about this scenario.  I mean if you hear about some moron selling something for $10,000.00 you are going to try to sell yours for $11,000.00. It's human nature to be greedy so don't fault yourself for it. It is embedded in our very DNA. we simply cannot help it.  That fact disturbs & bothers me.  I know it's true, I'm just as guilty as everyone else.  Although I don't agree with this type of marketing, I have been known to benefit from it passively.

Say for example, you sell a 1958 Les Paul for $3,000.00 in 1978,  If you bought another one somewhere you might try to sell it for $4,500.00 in 1979, $6,900.00 in 1980  $9,500.00 in 1981 and so on and so on by the time you reach 2010 the price would be well over $300,000.00  (When I did the math,  I accounted for no increase during the mid 80's because during that time the value actually dropped on those types of guitars.  And they say that the 80's hairbands were not too bright !!!!...  Well maybe they were right,  I personally know a lot of older 80's ex hairheads who are falling hook line and sinker for the vintage guitar scam that has been perpetrated on the public for well over 30 years now.

Ok back to the story

These maggots repeated the same process over and over until they got the prices up over $200, 000.00 for a $175.00 list price old Les Paul.

I myself have been brought hundreds of guitars to be restored and aged to look like old vintage instruments.

With old Fender's it's almost child's play to recreate a 1957 Strat or a 1954 Tele.  There are luthiers & craftsmen who are building fake guitars from the ground up.  Currently I figure it costs less than $1,000.00 to counterfeit an old Fender and less than $2,500.00 to counterfeit a 1959 Les Paul burst.

I am not accusing this chain of stores of counterfeiting although it certainly isn't impossible for them to do.  They have the resources to easily do it.  (I personally don't think they are actually doing it)

There are enough people out there already doing it so that they don't need to do it themselves.  The people who do it are always very small shops with one cash paid off the books employee at the most. If you have a lot of employees you will definitely get caught so bigger companies would never dare to do it.

Celebrity customers are the ones that really fall for these scams. There are some high profile  movie stars and "A" list musicians who are really falling for it. These people have the money to be able to afford these insane prices and if they see these guitars going up steadily they feel it's a safe investment.  In reality, it has a false bottom and when it drops out many people will lose their collective shirts.

Historically it has to happen,  They call it a market correction...

Look at the the Diamond Business, Gold & Silver, Ferraris, Real Estate... Junk Bonds it's all the same thing.  Guitars at least are cool you can make music with them.

I wrote this rant because !!!!!

A couple of weeks ago a guy walks in the store selling an old Gibson beginner model guitar.  Sold new for $60.00 in 1958, His mother had bought it for him. The guitar resided under his bed for 45 years and was almost new. The guy tells me he wants $5,000.00 for it.   I gagged a little because I could taste the bile when I almost vomited !!!!

I take the guitar on consignment, because there is absolutely No Fu#%ing Way I would pay that kind of money for a crappy old guitar that cost less than $12.00 to manufacture. Today 45 years later could be made from scratch better for $20 dollars in Korea. I have strat copy guitars in stock that cost me less than $38.00 each landed in my store that would play circles around this guitar.

Wait the story is not over !!!!

I have the guitar about a month and I actually get a very well known, very talented guitarist inquiring about purchasing it. I don't want to piss this guy off so I play the silly game myself and call the owner and try to get him to drop his price to something more realistic.  During the course of this process, I become aware of the full tilt boogie scam that a particular chain of stores is perpetrating.  So this had to be written.

The other thing that people ask me about almost daily is the huge influx of Chinese & Korean excellent quality perfect fakes that are coming into the USA by the containerload.

There are currently hundreds of fake Les Pauls being shipped into the USA.  You can buy them on Ebay for prices as low as $100.00 (plus $300.00 for shipping from China)  Most of them say Gibson on them and even say made in USA. The serial numbers are perfect and I myself could very easily be fooled.  I remember a company in the Phillipines bringing in fake old Fenders as far back as 1978.

This is very comical, One Company  "Jinda Trading" ran an ad on the internet showing exact copies of Les Pauls but was calling them "Fender Stratocasters"  I had to laugh at that one. These people obviously don't even know what they are selling, they also had  Rolex watches, Omega Watches, Nike Sneakers,  Izod La Coste shirts, Prada Shoes, Gucci Bags,  in short all the trappings of the BMW driving Yuppie who has more money than brains.   (Their ad is reprinted below   see it to believe it)

Gibson of course is suing everyone and anyone they can find with these copies. They even sued me over a small amount of copies that I bought last year through completely legitimate channels. In my case the guitars did not say Gibson on them and of course we didn't try to represent them as Gibsons. They were exact duplicates and I would guarantee that if they had said Gibson on them I would not have been able to tell the difference myself.  Currently I am researching this very heavily. I have found well over 125 companies so far that have made copies of Gibson's guitars,  I expect to have a minimum of 250 companies by December. I am working on a website that will expose many of these companies.  Due to my lawsuit with Gibson my attorneys advised me not to publish the site until after we win the case!

In the old days it was easy to tell a real Gibson from a fake because the copies didn't say Gibson & the fakes were not made as well.  Some of the fakes that people are showing me in my store are completely undetectable. back in December of 2005 an oriental person came into my store and asked me if I was interested in buying some Gibson  Les Paul, Zakk Wylde copies he showed me a sample and it was damned exact.

(Check This Out) I had the option of purchasing these with any name on them I desired, The one the salesman had with him said "Wylde" on the headstock. He informed me that the reason it didn't say Gibson on it was because then I would not have been able to tell it apart from a real Gibson and I would have suspected him of actually showing me a real Gibson just to take the order.

He told me he had sold well over 300 of them in the past week that he had been in the USA,  he said one store ordered them with "ZW" on the headstock but most of the stores ordered them with the word Gibson on the headstock.  My cost was to have been somewhere around $350.00 per guitar.

These guitars had real ebony fingerboards, Real EMG pickups, real MOP inlays, in short they were pretty nice guitars. He showed me photographs, good clear bright professional looking photos of sunburst models, SG's Explorers, 335's and even L5 Jazz guitars. They all looked dead on in the pictures,  he showed me close-ups of the headstocks most of them had 1999 serial numbers I asked him for his card and told him I would think about it.  He of course had no card and said he would get back to me.  This guy was pretty funny, he kept pointing to the EMG's and saying that they were real, he must have said it three times.

Dealers who bought these guitars from this maggot probably really hate me for printing this,  Ask me if I care !!!!

I know they are out in the stores, because when I was at the Dallas guitar show several months later.  Some greasy looking pimple faced peckerhead offered me one of them for $600.00. He actually had them with him, and he showed them to me. He told me "he could give me a better price if I bought 3 or more."  I told him  "I knew what they were and to please leave my booth!!!"  about 20 minutes later I went to get a hamburger and I saw him selling one to a kid and his father in the hallway.

Note from Ed Roman

The Local salespeople at Mars criticized me for not letting people handle our merchandise. In fact, Mars had a large sign which boldly stated "We Want you to play the Guitars." That is all well and good, while I applaud upper management at Mars for their attempt at a friendly altruistic attitude, I also see why they are Out Of Business.

Routinely customers would walk into my store in Las Vegas & specify they wanted a particular model of guitar. They would tell us they had tried it out at a Mars store. Mars had a decent price and all, but the condition of the instrument was deplorable.

Management at Mars came from the idea "Lets do it better than Guitar Center or Sam Ash."  Sadly management can't be everywhere at all times. Most people don't appreciate altruism, In fact they scorn it publicly. It saddens me a little (Very Little) that Mars went under. I can think of 2 other companies that deserved it much more.

Small Observation

I wonder if Mars could have returned the merchandise from inventory to their vendors and creditors. Maybe they could have if the condition of the inventory wasn't so incredibly atrocious, Maybe they might still be in business, I guess we'll never know.

Smaller Observation

I can see those poor saps at Mars when they were conceiving the concept of their stores, I can just see them sitting around the boardroom table asking each other questions. What can we do to make it a better shopping experience for our customers?  How can we win all of Sam Ash's customers and Guitar Centers customers?

Some suited geek probably piped up. I really hate it when a store won't let me try out the instruments!  Lets encourage everyone to try everything. In this way people will like us and want to do business with us.  NOT !!.  The truth here is simple one, In reality people want new fresh un played clean non dinged up merchandise.

So the next time you are in any store that seems to care a little about the condition of their inventory you should thank them from the bottom of your heart. Unless of course you are a no money browser, tire kicker, time wasting, looky lou. Usually the looky lou crowd will brag about the five $3,000.00 guitars they own. They will attempt to try to get you to give them free reign and give them Carte Blanche use of anything in the entire store.

These are usually the guys who brag about their free endorsements, most of them are lying. But it does serve to bring just a little more aggravation to my days.

There are of course exceptions to every rule. In fact. I am sure I have lost a couple of great customers over the years. My commitment is to my customers, My commitment is a guarantee that my paying customers will get top quality, factory fresh guitars, basses and amps. All the time wasting looky lou's  and be backers in the world will not change my commitment to my customers.

You can always spot a no money looky lou, He'll be the first to tell us what a great store we have, He will be the guy who promises to tell all his friends that they should buy only from our store, He is usually a no money, no future kind of guy and will rarely actually buy what he plays. Most of these guys are pretty decent players but they really don't care if they scratch up our merchandise or pilfer a tremelo bar or concentric knob as soon as the salesperson turns away.

So Goodbye MARS nice try, I can still think of 2 other companies that deserved it more.

Short Rant for Good Measure

Like the science-fiction world of the Matrix, a false reality is being pulled daily over people's eyes, often through what they see and hear on their TV screens. Facts have lost value. Logic rarely applies. Some living in this American Matrix are like the everyday people in the movies, simply oblivious to what's going on beneath the surface, either too busy or too bored to find out. Others appear to know better but behave like Cipher, the character in the original movie who chooses the fake pleasures of the Matrix over what Morpheus calls the desert of the real.

Subject: Roman Acquisitions

Hello Rich,

Just a quick note to say a heartfelt "THANKS" for working with me on the Quicksilver Tiger Eye (STUNNING!!!), Baker Bushwhacker  (I'm Truly speechless...), and the Pearlcaster--Best "Strat" I have ever owned and I have 2 others....

I have to give it a break for just a little while as I also just bought my first PRS Private Stock (also in Tiger Eye).

Also, please let Ed know that I appreciate the care and workmanship that went into these wonderful guitars that bear his name. Jan, my wife loves the Quicksilver Tiger Eye, the Spalted Maple Bushwhacker as well as the Alembic Tribute the best of all 26 guitars in our house.

Future considerations will be a Koa BC Rich Bich and the Jackson Shattered Glass Soloist. If you come across any other unusual ones, please let me know.

Dave Joseph

Hi Ed,

I recently read one of your posted "Flamers" by Rick Hammer. I have one question: How could someone this ignorant and / or young manage to afford two PRS's and a Gibson? (I think I'm seriously underemployed.)

On a personal note: I may not agree with all of your (Ed's) personal views, but when it comes to guitars I have yet to find anything you are wrong about. Your display at the summer NAMM show was, overall, the best at the show. I thought the lines you displayed were absolute tops in terms of quality and cosmetics. (Lines at the show: Quicksilver, Pearlcaster, Jet, Jaros, Abstract, Gledura.) They all played great and looked stunning.

Later,

Richard Bowen

(an ignorant hillbilly in Western N.C.)

Hi Richard

Thanks for your continued support. The newest line is Viking Guitars and I am talking to a world renowned Archtop builder for my 2004 lineup.

See you at NAMM

A Readers Rant

"Turdland Guitar"

Hello Ed

This Gibson Byrdland was well over 5,000.00 and I waited for almost 2 years to get it.   When It finally arrived the pickguard was falling off and the top had cracked directly in the center of the F Hole. The fingerboard had delaminated at the top frets and there was actually rust on the tailpiece. I called the dealer who apologized to me and gave me a number to call at Gibson. It took me a total of 4 hours of phone calls before I was able to reach a human it was an exercise in futility to finally get someone who had the power to give me a return authorization code.

I sent them the guitar because the tard  told me they would replace it with a new guitar.  I waited about 5 months and the same guitar came back to me this time it was worse. They had repaired the crack and it was still visible, some churl had polished the tailpiece and you could still see the area where the rust had been because the plating was a tad corroded. The fingerboard had been sloppily repaired because there were apparent glue stains on the binding by the top frets. This time there was an indentation on the fret board where some bozo had obviously clamped the finger board down while the glue dried.

To make matters worse, much worse there were little red stains that looked like crayon markings on the top of the guitar. These markings appeared to be under the finish.  If you look closely at the picture you will see one of them by the back tone pot. There were about 9 more of them if you look carefully you can see them directly above the tailpiece.  One of the marks measured about 6" long it stretches from above the tailpiece to almost the bottom of the F hole. There are some small blotchy ones down by the input jack extending up to where the tailpiece is joined to the butt of the guitar.

The Flarb who inspected this guitar had to be blind in one eye and couldn't see out of the other.

But wait it gets even worse! The binding on the lower F hole came off within 24 hours of getting it back, The intonation sounded like it had been done by a monkey, not just any monkey, I figure it had to be a retarded monkey.

I contacted my dealer who apologized again, He also told me that he had been having similar nightmares with other Gibson guitars. He told me that he was going to drop the line and look for another brand to represent.

Again I called Gibson,  Surprise Surprise I got the same merry go round of BS voicemail messages.  Al Capone would have been proud of me, if he had heard some of the death threats I left on their telephone voice mail.  Needless to say no one called me back.

The picture you see here is after I had the entire body polished and all the repairs done at a cost to me of over 600 dollars.  This is the same picture I used to put this piece of crap on EBAY, the guitar sold to a dealer in New York for 3300 dollars.  I thank Christ that I will never have to see it again.

So now I'm in the market for another Jazz guitar, You sold my friend Victor Harris a Triggs R5, I have played it and it's easily twice as nice as "the Turdland "

I am still licking my wounds but as soon as I recover I will be calling you for either a Triggs, or an Eastman guitar.  I sure hope you print this it will give me a little satisfaction.

This episode cost me a 1700 dollar direct loss on the instrument,  600 plus loss on the repair, plus the freight to Gibson was over 150 because like a jerk I shipped it overnight.

Oh yeah. then Egay banged me another 55.00 dollars in the ass

I solemnly vow that as long as I live I will NEVER EVER purchase any Gibson product, new or used, not even a set of strings.

I LOVE YOUR RANTS   Keep em' comin'

Ronnie Lewicki

Overland Park, KS

Hey Ronnie

I am sorry to hear your story,  yes I will print it.  In fact,  I am going to start printing many more of these letters good or bad!

This syndrome is growing at an alarming rate, In my opinion large corporations have no place in the art world.  I mean would you buy a painting at a Wal-Mart?  Believe it or not, they actually do sell them!

Regarding your solemn vow not to purchase any Gibson products, Just in case you aren't aware I wanted to list some of them.  I wish I could make that same vow but I can't fight a brainwashed public.

Anyway here are a few of the names of brands that Gibson owns or distributes !!

Epiphone Guitars, Steinberger Guitars, Kramer Guitars, Dobro Resonators, Wurlitzer Jukeboxes,  Baldwin Pianos,  Maestro Effects, Tobias Guitars, Valley Arts Guitars, Truetone, Music Yo, Yo Gear, Avante Guitars, Shadow Pickups, Oberheim Electronics & I am sure there are more that I don't know about.

Remember Gibson USA did not create or start 90% of these companies, they simply acquired them. They decided to use the name Gibson as their Flagship name. So I urge you not to be afraid of an old Epiphone or Steinberger Guitar. The original real Oberheim synthesizers from the early 80's before midi are awesome.

Again I am sorry to hear your story and I will do my best to make sure that you never have an experience like that with any purchase you make from me.

This I Solemnly Vow !!!

Ed Roman

Dear Mr. Roman,

Let me just reinforce your "Rants" section by saying they are very informative while being super entertaining at the same time (quite hard to accomplish if you ask me). The sections regarding internet flamers and purchasing American products (spend your money you freakin' idiots!) are great articles to motivate all the ignoramus sheep that wander this side of the fence. Please, start your own guitar magazine, hell everyone else has, covering every facet of guitar types, playing, genre's etc. I'm pretty sure there's a banjo-nylon guitar ukulele magazine somewhere out there deep within the media abyss). But I feel your opinions coupled with the facts that you provide are great guides for us less informed hypocrites (myself included) and that I greatly appreciate the information.

Sincerely

Sean Lopez

Assets of Mars Music to be Auctioned

October 21, 2002 -- The Mars Music superstore chain has abandoned plans to re-organize under its current ownership and will liquidate its assets.

1  down 2 more to go.... yay team !!!!!!!

A bankruptcy auction will be held this Thursday in Florida.

Liquidator Great American Group has entered an opening bid for all the assets, with plans to liquidate Mars' substantial inventory this fall in "going-out-of-business" sales at the Mars store locations if no higher bids come in.

Other potential bidders, however, are reportedly considering buying the assets in order to keep at least some of the stores open under new ownership.

According to the bankruptcy filing, several interested parties have already signed non-disclosure agreements and are reviewing both Mars' operations and potential business plans. Aside from liquidators, potential bidders could include investment groups, as well as other MI retailers looking to expand their geographic reach.

Mars founder and CEO Mark Begelman has resigned from the company and the Mars board, but it is not known whether he is working with any of the potential bidder groups.

Mars originally filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy with the intention of closing underperforming stores, arranging new financing, and continuing with a trimmed down operation. The company put together business plans for both 29 and 20 store chains.

In the end, however, the company could not obtain financing, and decided it had "little choice but liquidate [its] assets," according to bankruptcy documents.

The liquidation could mean bad news for many in the musical instrument industry, both because many manufacturers may not be paid in full -- or at all -- for goods sold to Mars, and because massive liquidation sales this fall in several major markets could depress sales for other retailers.

As of October 6, 2002, Mars had $63.7 million of inventory at cost, plus another $1.1 million of inventory in a rental pool, according to the bankruptcy document. This inventory has declined since that date as inventory was sold, without new goods coming in. The liquidator has agreed to pay roughly 74% of the at cost value of the new inventory if its bid is approved, and roughly 26% of the at cost value of the rental pool inventory.

Congress Financial, Mars' primary lender, is owed about $33 million in secured loans.

Unsecured creditors generally receive payment only after and if secured creditors are paid. Certain other expenses, including attorneys' fees and costs incurred after the start of bankruptcy, also enjoy preference over unsecured creditors.

Nineteen of the twenty top unsecured Mars creditors are musical instrument are accessories vendors, with claims totaling over $13.6 million according to the bankruptcy filings. They include:

(I only listed some of the ones I personally am glad to see got burned)

  • Roland Corporation $ 1,923,424.51
  • JBL Consumer Products $1,748,796.78
  • Gibson Nashville $ 908,838.99
  • Shure Brothers Inc. $ 506,988.43
  • Taylor Guitars $ 299,105.82
  • Warner Brothers Publications $ 219,940.09

Creditors with claims too small to put them in the top 20 are not disclosed in the current filings, but it is certain that other musical instrument companies are among those with smaller -- but still significant -- unsecured claims.

Mars bankruptcy attorney Paul Battista said that there is still hope that unsecured creditors might receive some payment, but that it is uncertain. "The Debtor and the Committee are hopeful that monies will be available for unsecured creditors. We will not know for sure until several other matters get resolved."

Beginning with the acquisition of a small chain of Florida-based music stores in 1996, Mars pursued a very aggressive expansion plan, building dozens of superstores through the South and some far reaches of the US, complemented by an e-commerce web site.

At its peak, Mars Music consisted of 50 stores, but had already reduced its size to 41 stores by the time of the Chapter 11 filing.
