Who Is Mogami?

Mogami has earned a reputation within the professional recording industry as the finest cable in the world.  This cable is famous for unmatched accuracy, extremely low noise, remarkable flexibility, ease of installation, superior quality and consistency.  Engineers rave about amazing clarity and silent background.  Most people outside the recording industry are surprised to learn that virtually every major recording facility is wired exclusively with Mogami.  Of course, this means that just about any recording you are likely to listen to has been mastered with MOGAMI.

Mogami’s scientists began research 35 years ago into the scientific causes of audible differences in signal cable.  At the time this research was ground breaking and extremely controversial, at a time when many in audio engineering thought all cable should sound identical.  Mogami’s approach remains unique, as they are serious audio listeners with many years of experience.  They are also theoretical physicists with the ability to apply true scientific research to problems of low-loss signal transfer.

The Mogami philosophy is to offer the most accurate signal transfer possible.  Most accurate means allowing as little change as possible to the signal, while preventing added noise.

While this seems simple, in fact, many cable companies attempt to alter the signal for the “best sound”, really working for the most flattering distortions.  This approach is problematic for a number of reasons, but most fundamentally because a given distortion, however flattering, will forever alter what has been sent through it.  While it may make one system sound “better” it will make many sound worse.  Building a system around such additive distortions makes it impossible to judge equipment properly because of the distorted signals.  If a recording is made with such a cable the essence of the original signal is forever lost!

There is no single magic bullet for cable design.  Superior design is an appropriate mix of conductor material, dielectric, geometry, fillers, jacket, etc.  Only expertise with experience can result in the kind of performance that transcends the ordinary.  Mogami uses only pure OFC conductors (they don’t care for the sound of silver in an audio cable), XLPE (cross linked polyethylene) insulation for high dielectric strength and best dimensional stability (it doesn’t shrink back during soldering).  All audio cables are surrounded with a unique lapped spiral copper shield that offers 100% coverage even when flexed.  It is the finest available for noise reduction at audio frequencies.  Additionally, Mogami has applied their considerable design expertise to a line of superb video cables.

Mogami cable is truly overkill for most weekend warrior guitarists.  However if you are using a lot of processing gear or pedals, you will notice an audible difference.  I have personally heard the difference and I can testify to it.

There are several other major companies who profess to have the same quality cable. I have come to the the belief that these companies build a good cable but they are highly overpriced and most of their sales pitch is basically hype.  I have found that the Core One Cable is probably the most noiseless and best sounding until you get to Mogami of course.

The most popular high end cable is Monster Cable, It is of course very good cable. I personally think it's a little too stiff & rigid.  Personally I prefer a more supple cable, I have not been able to discern any real noticeable quality difference between quality cables that cost much less.

There are countless cable companies. I have surmised the reason for this is the profits are very high.  At Ed Roman guitars we are recommending Proel Cable,  Core One & Mogami
